The memorial is situated in the main hall which is in the centre of the building and is surrounded by classrooms it is three storeys high. The monument is in the centre of the hall and is enclosed by a brass railing. It is placed on a painted stone plinth with a marble top, at the centre of the plinth there is a rectangle marble plaque bordered by patterned “THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE” and a patterned marble border with patterned pillars topped with alabaster scrolls. The brass plate with the war dead is in the centre of an ornate shrine which has a wreath above held by two cherubs with the gold painted inscription “FOR COUNTRY AND KING” inside it, above this there are three sculptures on the left a mother and child in the middle a soldier on a horse sword drawn and a weeping woman. Below the soldier gold painted “SHAWLANDS ACADEMY” above his head a feather plume. The memorial is set in a plastered deep blue painted archway with a gold painted border closed in by white painted wood coving above the feather plume is the painted SHAWLANDS ACADEMY 1914 a shield with “SOLA NOBOLITAS VIRTUS” with a thistle in the centre and 1919 WAR MEMORIAL on the other side. Painted in gold at either side of the border around the soldier This War Memorial was unveiled by Lady Stirling Maxwell on 29th April 1921 . . . The memorial is on the whole in a fair condition with only a few chips to the plinth and some lacquer damage to the brass.
