About the memorial: The tower is all that remains of the oroginal church which was destroyed by an explosion in 1746. The Jacobite army had been storing gunpowder in it and this exploded. The usual story is that this was deliberate but the SWMP (see Link) suggests that it was the accidental consequence of the chaos of withdrawal. In the late 20th century the structure became unsafe and the burial ground was locked, but retoration work now permits closer access again.
