About the memorial: This memorial was the original memorial for the 2nd Lord Ashburton by his widow erected in 1865. In 2013 a resident of Northington, Lt Col (rtd) Peter Lamb approached the present Lord Ashburton to ask if the memorial could be further dedicated as a War Memorial (some thing the locals believed it already to be). he agreed. Subsequently a grey granite plaque containing the names of 11 souls who were lost in the two World Wars was added to the memorial, which itself is a grey celtic granite cross on a pink granite plinth. The memorial was declared a War Memorial by The Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire on 14 July 2015 exactly one hundred years from the death of the first person named on the plaque. The memorial is situated on the mound of the old Northington Church. A new church was rebuilt nearby in 1884.
