About the memorial: A Portland stone latin cross with leaded lettering which stands in the churchyard of St. Matthew's Church. AWM 59456 To erect in the churchyard of St Matthew Sutton Bridge on a site to the west of the north porch and in full view of the main street a cross of stone in memory of the parishioners fifteen feet high, inscribed: - A. M. D. G. In grateful memory of all those from This parish who gave their lives For their country 1914 – 1918 With the names of forty eight men and the following inscription at the back "Hold in everlasting remembrance" Faculty Book 14, page 28 Inscribing of names of those killed in the 1939 – 45 war and repainting of names on the War Memorial in the Churchyard Seal affixed 28th October 1949 Faculty Book, # 1333.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
