About the memorial: Butterleigh, Devon WW1 & WW2 memorial inside St Matthews Church. Names in black incised on marble. Decoratively pedimented, white marble Great War tablet attached to a wall mounted, portrait orientated pedimented backboard further supported by two corbel stones at the base. A small lower extension to the backboard supports an additional WW2 plain marble tablet positioned between the corbel stones. The main tablet is flanked by two vertical columns rising from a heavy moulded lower rail. In turn, the columns aid support to the moulded pediment. The columns are each adorned by three incised vertical stop-bands, infilled with a gold coloured paint. The tympanum contains a raised St. George flag and Union flag either side of a raised laurel wreath enclosing the "Monogram of Constantine" Cross. Beneath the flags, is a raised banner scroll with an incised single inscription verse finished in a gold coloured paint. The first incised verse on the main tablet is also finished in gold. The remaining incised inscriptions and names are infilled with black paint on both tablets.
