About the memorial: A rough stoned rock with 2 bronze plaques on its front with etched dedication and names for each world war. The WW! plaque has school crest at its head and both have a double line border. Bronze plaques set on a granite block. One addenda for 1914-1918 names. Three pupils killed in air raid 1915 included. One 1915 casualty included in 1939-1945 names.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

The original War Memorial  took the form of a bronze plaque listing the names of the 105 Old Boys and 3 pupils who had died in the Great War.
“It was hoped that the School War Memorial would be ready for unveiling on November 11th, but it was impossible to get the work completed so early. An account of the unveiling on November 19th will be found in this issue.” (Mid-Whitgiftian, Christmas 1921)

The unveiling of the Memorial took place on Saturday, November 19th. The ceremony, which was very impressive, was held in the playground, and the Memorial was unveiled by Mr Howard Houlder, and dedicated by the Vicar of Croydon.

After a hymn had been sung, the Headmaster made a few remarks in which he said we must ever respect the memory of those who gave their lives for us. He wished that the Rev. GA Jones could have been present, but the latter was unhappily unable to attend, but wrote a letter from which the Headmaster read an extract. The Headmaster then thanked Mr JC Taylor who had designed the Memorial, and read out the list of names inscribed on it.

Mr Houlder then made a speech in which he exhorted his hearers – who included many of the boy’s friends and relations – always to follow the path of duty, and he concluded by pointing out that peace has its victories as well as war, and we should always try to uphold the former. The Memorial was then unveiled and dedicated and the band played the Retreat. A touching ceremony concluded with the singing of the school song and the National Anthem.” (Mid-Whitgiftian, Christmas 1921).

Whitgift Grammar School had moved to new premises in South Croydon in 1931. That same year Whitgift Middle took over the premises in North End and the Memorial plaque moved as well.

At the Governors meeting on 2nd July 1936 they considered a request from the Old Boys (the Old-Mid-Whitgiftian Association) to erect on the lawn in front of the School a suitable Memorial Stone holding the bronze plaque (which was at that time in the School). The OMWA had also submitted a design for consideration.

The Governors decided that the Foundation would carry out and pay for the work with the OMWA subscription fund set up for the purpose being put towards the cost. The original estimate for the work was £56 - later increased to £64 15sh - of which £35 15sh 6d was contributed by the OMWA. The new Memorial was to be provided by CE Ebbutt and Sons.

The Mid-Whitgiftian (July 1937) contained the following article:-

“The Unveiling of the War Memorial
On the morning of Founders Day – an unusually cold and snowy one – before marching to church, the School assembled around the lawn. After the singing of the hymn: O God Our Help In Ages Past, the new War Memorial was unveiled by Alderman Wood Roberst (note: Chairman of the Schools Committee) and dedicated by the Bishop of Croydon. Mr Francis Allen JP (note: Chairman of the Court of Governors) and the Mayor and Mayoress were present at the ceremony.

Alderman Wood Roberts explained the reason why, nearly twenty years after the war, there should be a re-dedication of the war memorial. He thought everyone would agree that it was fitting for the memorial to have the “plain strength of rugged granite”. Wreaths were placed on the Memorial by Mr Francis Allen, the Headmaster and Mr J Grew (the last named on behalf of the Old Boys).

The ceremony ended with the Last Post and National Anthem, played by the drum and fife band of the Cadet Corps.”

In 1965 the School (renamed Trinity School of John Whitgift in 1954) moved again to the site of the Shirley Hotel and the Memorial was moved to its present, rather inconspicuous, site on the edge of the playing fields.
