About the memorial: On the west side of the road, beside the turning to the car park for the castle. A needle-shaped obelisk of polished red granite upon a tapered plinth, the front (east) bearing the general commemoration and the names of 8 men who fell in WW1: on the right (north) face are the names of 12 who died in WW2. The whole stands upon a similar red granite lower plinth, all of which stand upon a three-stepped stone base. The memorial stands upon a paved square within a walled and chained enclosure, topped with railings. The names on each face are listed with the officers first, and then the other ranks, generally, by surname, with first names, ranks (for the officers) and units for WW1. The names are listed similarly for WW2 with every man's rank shown. At least one name is known to have been omitted- Guardsman Mervyn Henry John, died while training at Aldershot on 1 April 1947.
