About the memorial: The War Memorial project was initiated by the Crank Village Community Association on behalf of residents of Crank and Kings Moss. This was the result of an idea from village teenager, Chloe Biltcliffe who had visited the Commonwealth War Graves site in France where a former neighbour was buried. Committee member Major (Retd) Mike Brimage TD, as project manager, designed the memorial and organised the required planning permission. Major Brimage researched the names of the fallen for inclusion with the assistance of Frank Rimmer and Joan Dagnall from Rainford Parish Church. Stone for the construction was donated by various village residents. The stonework was completed by Crank resident Steve Mousdell and the Memorial was dedicated on Sunday, 19 July 2015, by the Reverend Major John Williams.; July 2018- The Trustees of the Crank Recreation Ground have, over the last six months, undertaken fund raising activities and have also obtained a grant from Crank Village Community Association. These funds have enabled the landscaping of the area around the memorial. The work was undertaken by Simon Black of The Urban Jungle Landscape Company.; September 2020- For the last five years the engraved plaque served our community well. However the weather has over the years faded the plaque and made some of the wording and names very hard to read. With finance from the Crank Village Community Association and approval from the Recreation Ground Trustees a new slate engraved tablet was commissioned with The Stone Workshop, Ulverston and the plaque was installed in position on 6 September 2020. Thanks to the original donor of the plaque which will be relocated to a suitable indoor site within the community.
