About the memorial: The original memorial to Lt Herdman was a Memorial Institute. This fell into disrepair so was demolished and replaced by a Library on the same site which bears his name. A plaque inside the Library records all this with a photograph of Lt Herdman who was killed near Montauban on the Somme on July 1st 1916.The copper plaque is surmounted by a wooden framed sketch of Lt Herdman and flanked by two others of his parents. 'This institute / is founded in memory of / George Andrew Herdman / 2nd Lieutenant 18th Kings Liverpool Regt. / Killed in action near Montauban at the Battle / of the Somme on July 1st 1916 aged 20 / and is given to the men of Port Erin / by his father and mother Dec. 1916.'
