About the memorial: Two stepped granite octagonal base, set in junction of road. Bronze plaques on SW and NW sides have pictorial reliefs of soldiers in action in the Black Mountain and Tirah expeditions. SE face inscribed dedicatory plaque and NW face has list of names. The base is surmounted by a statue of a young officer in the uniform of the Bengal Regiment prior to the Indian Mutiny. He wears a plumed shako and has a drawn sword downward facing in his right hand and his left hand resting on his hip. Cannon to rear. The two reliefs are signed by W Goscombe John, and the statue base by him and A.B. Burton, Founder, Thames Ditton. SCulptor: Sir William Goscombe John

Royal Sussex Regiment / To the / honour and glory / of / The officers, non-commissioned / officers and men of the 2nd Bat- /talion Royal Sussex Regiment / formerly 107 Regiment Bengal / Infantry who lot their lives / during the service of the Batt- / alion abroad in Malta, Egypt / and in India from 1882 to 1902 / and in special memory of the Ca- / mpaign in which the battalion / took part in the Black Mountain / expedition of 1897-98.
