About the memorial: Memorial Plaque remembers all those killed as a result of a Mid Air Collision above this site on the night of 23-24/08/43 78 Sqn Halifax BB373 EY-K had departed Breighton at 2012 for Ops Berlin, shortly afterwards Halifax JB874 EY-E also departed Breighton at 2027 for Ops Berlin On return to base the Sqn aircraft were informed that poor weather was affecting the area and they were to divert to Leconfield near Beverley. Whilst orbiting in the Leconfield circuit, awaiting permission to land the visibility here too also began to worsen and tragically, two Halifax's collided and crashed at Hull Bridge, Tickton, two miles NE of Beverley at 0430 Amazingly there was one survivor, Sgt J. Greet, Rear Gunner on Halifax JB874 EY-E. He was admitted to Beverley Base Hospital, suffering from fractures to the base of the skull and right femur. So serious were these injuries that nearly five years were to pass before he had fully recovered. Later, when their daughter was born, Sgt Greet and his wife christened her Beverley! This had already been a bad night for 78 Sqn. During the course of this raid, two Halifax had already been shot down near the target, with a third ditching in the North Sea.
