About the memorial: According to Neil Oliver's book 'Not Forgotten' this memorial seat is in the shadow of the Royal Scots Greys statue and memorial on Princes Street. Cpl McPhie was killed while leading a group trying to repair a floating bridge being used by the British but under machine gun fire from the Germans. He is quoted as saying ' It's death or glory work which must be done.'
