About the memorial: Rectangular Column supported by a life sized bronze female figure of Justice bringing peace, with wide spreading wings and bust undraped, holding a wreath in her right hand uplifted. Relief of a wreath and burning torch on the 6 o’clock face. The memorial is surrounded by flower beds and a low fence of 12 granite posts and 24 solid bronze bars. The site was gifted by the Railway Company. The overall cost was £2151/7/3. The memorial itself cost £1,500, preparation of the site £400, the railings cost £169/10, the balance was sundry expenses. The subscriptions raised £2,189/9/3. The balance was handed over from the Memorial Committee to the Town Council for future maintenance. World War 2 names were added on by the munificence of Messrs Walker Brothers, Building Contractors. A plaque was added in 1995 stating that a service was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of VE Day.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
