Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

It would be nice to see a Star of David British Legion peg in the photo of the Aberdovey Commando memorial in the public gardens at Aberdovey, as a respectful nod to the fact that virtually every man was Jewish! - rather than just Crosses - very disrespectful to Jewish people not to acknowledge and indeed deliberately ignore this fact, given the Holocaust of their families and 6 million other Jews - (see my book, 'Fighting Back' and also Peter Masters' book, 'Striking Back; Jewish Commandos against the Nazis') . 

Their formation was deliberate BECAUSE they were Jewish refugees with specialist language skills and HIGH motivation to hit back at the Nazis

I have tried 3 times over the years to persuade Aberdovey Council to add the word 'JEWISH' German refugees to the memorial, but they refuse and at the time of its unveiling there was some controversy and anti-Jewish feeling about it in  the local press, letters etc. It is not too late to make amends. Some of the vets were assismilationist and did not care, but others I spoke to and wrote to, wanted the word 'Jewish' but were out-voted. This  memorial  thus remains a travesty of the truth, anti-Education and, yes, even anti-Semitic, and should be dealt with at long last. It does not tell the truth by omitting it.

By the way, the Local war memorial on the wall nearby, to local men, is also wrong – Commando Max Laddy was really refugee Max Lewinsky and Jewish like the rest of the No 3 Troop, who married a local girl. Why she and Aberdovey Council wished to hide his real name, is beyond me, equivalent to stealing his Jewish identity. If this were any other ethnic minority, including a Welsh Commando Group, it would not happen.

It is profoundly wrong for this to have occurred and to keep these mens’ true ethnicity out of public reach and knowledge; your children should know for all time, who these men really were - Jewish Commandos Striking back.

Given the recent great interest in Wales about Jewish Welsh History and the agreed proposals for Jewish History of Wales centres in both North and South Wales, this breach/denial of historical fact at Aberdovey,  is extraordinary.

If money is the issue I could ask around for donors to add a small plaque of a few words, or better still, a small Star of David at the top of the main memorial stone?
