About the memorial: Displayed in the Engine Shed Museum at SVR Highley and only accessible by paying entrance fee to museum. This is a large handwritten list that gives rank, name, service details and where buried of those who died while serving in Royal Engineers Railway Transportation Units during the Second World War. They include Lieutenant Colonel Sir Nigel Gresley CBE who was considered to be still a member of the Engineer and Railway Staff Corps of the Royal Engineers when he died on the 5th, April 1941. The gallant sacrifice of the men of the Royal Engineers Railway Transportation units who lost their lives in the War and its immediate aftermath is further commemorated by this Roll of Honour recording the names of 354 Railway Sapper casualties, which has been compiled from information held by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. This was dedicated by Lieutenant/General Sir Scott Grant, KCB, Chief Royal Engineer, on 3rd November 2002 at a service at Kidderminster on the Severn Valley Railway, conducted by the Reverend James Symonds. Two Books of Remembrance were also dedicated. These are held in the Royal Engineers Museum at Brompton Barracks, Chatham and the Museum of Army Transport at Beverley. Further research revealed that for many, no unit information was recorded. Subsequently, where this information has become available, names including the casualties from Movement Control are now recorded on a subsequent and smaller Roll of Honour hung to the right of the original. Both Rolls are handwritten on paper and protected by glass. The larger is enclosed in a timber frame whilst the second is affixed to a board together with the badge of the Royal Engineers and a commemoration of civilian deaths in a rail accident in 1957

AT THE TOP OF THE MAIN LIST:- RAILWAY TRANSPORTATION UNITS of the CORPS of ROYAL ENGINEERS, WORLD WAR II On 27th September 1986, at Highley on the Severn Valley Railway, ex-LMS Stanier Class 8F locomotive No. 8233 (British railways No. 48773), which was built to War Department order as WD 307 in 1940, was dedicated as the official Memorial to all British military railwaymen who gave their lives on active service in World War II. At the dedication service, conducted by the Very Reverend Peter Haynes, Dean of Hereford, commemorative plaques on the locomotive recording its operation by the Corps of Royal Engineers in Persia (Iran) and Egypt were unveiled. Locomotive No. 307 was first placed in operation on the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) as No. 8233 until reclaimed by the War Department in late 1941 for operation by the Corps of Royal Engineers on the wartime supply route to Russia from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea. Later, renumbered 70307 and subsequently 500, the locomotive remained in operation with the Corps of Royal Engineers until 1957, initially in Egypt before repatriation to the UK in 1952, when it served on the Longmoor Military Railway. Acquired by British Railways as No. 48773 in 1957, the locomotive was purchased for preservation by the Stanier 8F Locomotive Society when steam traction ended on the national railway network in 1968, and was placed in operation on the Severn Valley Railway in its former guise of LMS 8233, changed to British Railways 48773 in 1992. The gallant sacrifice of the men of the Royal Engineers Railway Transportation units who lost their lives in the War and its immediate aftermath is further commemorated by this Roll of Honour which has been compiled from information held by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. This was dedicated by Lieutenant/General Sir Scott Grant, KCB, Chief Royal Engineer, on 3rd November 2002 at a service at Kidderminster on the Severn Valley Railway, conducted by the Reverend James Symonds.
