Capt. F. J. Walker CB DSO***RN Printed card alonside the bust:- Town Hall Liverpool/ The Battle of the Atlantic 1939/45/ Captain 'Johnnie' Walker CB DSO and 3 Bars/ has been described by historians as the greatest/ sailor since Horatio Nelson./ His U Boat hunting escort support group, using/ methods devised by him succeeded in destroying/ record numbers of marauding German U Boats,/ thus overcoming the U Boat menace which/ threatened our nation's survival in World War Two./ His U Boat hunters were based and sailed from/ the Port of Liverpool. It has been said that/ among the great naval escort captains in the/ Atlantic campaign, Captain Walker, more than/ any other was responsible for the victory over/ the U Boats. Churchill said 'the only thing that/ ever frightened me was the U Boat menace.' For/ if we had lost the Atlantic Battle, we would have/ lost the war./ The Captain died in July 1944 from a massive/ brain haemorrhage, brought on ny exhaustion in/ his heroic work in making sure that Hitler's/ attempts to starve us into submission would not/ succeed. We are in his debt and all our heroic/ seafarers also in our country's valiant years.
