About the memorial: DECORATED CELTIC STYLE WITH CARVED DEPICTIONS OF ACTION IN MUTINY. Historic England listing entry - Memorial, 1863, to soldiers of the 8th the Kings Regiment who died in the Indian Mutiny. Limestone Celtic Cross on sandstone base. Front of cross bears 3 relief scenes, now very worn, the central one showing fighting, the lower one showing a burial. Sandstone base bears inscription: "This cross commemorates the services and death of 243 Officers, N.C. Officers and private soldiers lost by the 8th Sepoy Mutiny of 1857-1858. Some died in battle, some of wounds, some of disease all in the devoted performance of duty". To left return: "Erected at Portsmouth 1863"' to right return: "Removed to Chelsea 1877." to rear: "Removed to Liverpool 1911".
