About the memorial: Wall mounted circular bronze plaque with a laurel wreath border in heavy relief. Raised lettering. In relief, above & below inscription respectively, are a RAF emblem & a setting sun dropping beneath the ocean waves. Five-point stars in relief intermingle with inscription. S/L H. Maudsley DFC was the Pilot of 617 Sqn Lancaster ED937 AJ-Z that had departed Scampton at 2159 on 16/07/43 for OP CHASTISE (Target the Eder Dam). It was badly damaged over the target by the detonation of its own Upkeep Mine and was ordered to return to base. However, on the return leg it was engaged by 2cm Light Flak of Heimat Flak Abt Emmerich, hit and shot down. The aircraft crashed at Netterden, 3km E of Emmerich at 0236. All seven crew were killed. NB The Plaque incorrectly states he was killed in the attack on the Mohne Dam
