Can you help?

In 2018, WMT gave a grant towards this war memorial. As it has been a number of years since the grant was given, we would like an up-to-date condition survey and photographs to be added to this war memorial record. Can you help?

Status: Unknown
Type: Non freestanding
Location: Internal
Setting: Inside a building - public/private
Description: Board/Plaque/ Tablet
Materials:
  • Metal Brass
Lettering: Inscribed on a plaque
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: The memorial commemorates the men of the church and parish who lost their lives in World War 1. In 1867 Rev. William Mcguiness erected a tent and started preaching and holding services, In 1868 he built a tin church, in 1872 a church school was opened. By writing ten thousand letters each year for several years Rev Mcguiness raised £9000 to build a church which was completed in 1881. The church was destroyed by bombing in 1944. We have a service sheet from 1920 with names from the Plaque on it. We believe the plaque was salvaged from the church and kept in the boiler room in the new church which was built in 1957.We have found a family member to one of the names and his child's baptism in 1913 in our church register. We have applied for a WM Grant, have got a restorer from the conservation register. On 10 August 2017 we were offered a 75% grant by W.MT. to help restore our plaque. A faculty has been given by Southwark Diocese to proceed with restoration which has started on the 27 March 2018. Paul Winslow has found information on 70 of the names on the plaque and is creating a website. The plaque has been restored and erected in the vestibule in All Saints Church on 1 June 2018. It has not been restored to its former glory but bears the scars of age and war. More information has been found about H.R. Farrar on the plaque, he died on the Christmas eve truce and was the son of Rev. H.W. Farrar of the old All Saints Church in 1910. On 11 November 2018 All Saints remembered the fallen whose names were on the plaque. 8 people of all ages read out each name.
