About the memorial: It is a wheel cross of smooth granite. The cross surmounts a tapering square-set plinth wit inscription on the shaft and names around the plinth in incised black lettering.

ASTBURY WAR MEMORIAL CHESHIRE This memorial is situated at St Mary's Church, Astbury, Cheshire. Compiled with additional informantion by kind permission of the Common Wealth War Graves Commission To the glory of God In grateful memory of the soldiers from this parish who have laid down their lives in the Great European War 1914 - 1919 Greater love hath on man than this that a man lay down his life for his friend CLIFFE Arthur, killed in action May 1916. Private 2118, 13th Cheshire Regiment killed in action 29th May 1916 aged 20. Son of Samuel & Eliza of Astbury village. Buried at Ecovres Military Cemetery, Mont-St.Eloi, France STEELE Harry, died from wounds August 5th 1916. Private 5262, 5th attached to the 4th Lancashire Regiment. Buried at La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie, Somme, France YATES Hector John, killed in action September 26th 1916. Private G/40094,B Coy, 12th Middlesex Regiment, killed aged 24. John Thomas and Elizabeth T. Yates, of Brownlow, Congleton, Cheshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France CLARKE Harold killed in action August 1st 1917. Private 290706, 10th Cheshire Regiment. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium CUMBERBATCH Arthur, died July 9th 1918. Private 26500, Coldstream Guards died aged 26. Son of Charles & Sarah Hannah of Child's Lane, brownlow, Astbury. Buried at St Mary's churchyard, Astbury, Cheshire. PULFORD William, killed in action March 21st 1918. Bombardier 59768, 115th Seige Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France BALL Arthur, killed in action March 22nd 1918. Lance Corporal 26511, 10th Cheshire Regiment,died aged 28. Son of Samuel & Annie of 17. Union Street, Comgleton, Cheshire. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France MELLOR Walter, killed in action April 10th 1918. (CWGC have his death as 20th.) Private 59523, 11th Cheshire Regiment died aged 26. Only son of Frederick & Annie of Pot Bank House, Astbury. A member of the Metropolitan Police Force. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium. DAVENPORT Ernest Henry, killed in action September 20th 1917. Private 49478, 1/6th Cheshire Regiment died aged 26. Son of Mr & Mrs J Davenport of 29. Lion Street, Congleton, Cheshire. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium. POTTS John, killed in action August 27th 1918. Private 862549, Central Ontario Regiment, Canadian Infantry, died aged 19. Buried at Waincourt British Cemetery, France. HALL Henry Arthur died of wounds September 29th 1918. (CWGC have him listed as Arthur) Private 67586, 15th Cheshire Regiment, died aged 19. Son of Emily Hodgkinson of wall Hill, Astbury. Native of Garston, Lancashire and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium. PAINTER George William, died July 1st 1919. (On his grave stone his death is recorded as 4th June 1919.) Shoeing Smith, TS/1859, Royal Army Service Corps died aged 24. Son of Arthur & Harrietta of Holly Bush House, Sandbach, Cheshire. Buried at St Mary's churchyard, Astbury, Cheshire and is also commemorated on the war memorial situated in this churchyard 1939-1945 STUART Richard Killed in action December 29th 1943. Sergeant Air Gunner,1681268, 61st Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Son of Richard & May of Astbury and is buried at Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery,Berlin, Germany
