About the memorial: The monument is a copper panel attached to a wooden back board, there are 2 panels showing white paper on which is written the names and regiment of those who died. The copper has an arched pediment under which are shown the arms of The City of York with crossed sword and mace and a helmet with mantling. Then the words “To commemorate with lasting honour the sons of this school who gave their lives for their country in the Great War of 1914 -1918”. The top of the 2 panels each have a wreath of laurel and are joined by laurel swags which continue to the edge of the monument and run down the sides. Under the 2 panels on the copper are the words “Greater love has no man than this – that a man lay down his life for his friends” The bottom of the monument has 3 Tudor style Roses with leaves. It is said to be one of several similar monuments acquired by York Schools from Liberty of London which were then completed in York by the recording of the names in ink. According to IWM previously in St Margaret's Church Walmgate York and The Great War.com says that it is not known which school this came from. The St. Denys and St. George National School was nearly opposite the church
