About the memorial: Boer War memorial plaque. c1902. By G. Steele, sculptor of Wombwell. Well-carved sandstone surround; panel probably of granite. Corbels carved with lion's heads and Yorkshire roses flank the inscription 'DUTY NOBLY DONE'. Above, an inscribed panel in moulded architrave flanked by half-detached soldiers in battle dress set before draped flags. Shallow cornice beneath ogee-headed feature with unicorn crest within carved foliage; crown at apex. Inscription: dedication to, and names of, the people of Wombwell who served in the Boer War 1899-1902. c Historic England listing entry Lots of names of those who served but only one fatality

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
