About the memorial: The original hospital was opened in 1912 and the memorial extension in 1924. However, the buildings have been greatly further extended and it is now difficult to identify the 1924 extension and if a plaque was erected it has since been lost. Buxton Advertiser & List of Visitors, Saturday May 4, 1924. Memorials to Buxton’s fallen and Dr. J.J. Cox. …..The mayor, Ald. Smithurst, in explaining how the new wing and extensions formed part of the Buxton war memorial scheme, said that it was decided in 1919…..that a memorial should be erected on the Slopes [ref #149096 ], and that a new wing should be added to the Cottage Hospital……..It now helped to form the complete memorial to the men of Buxton who paid the supreme sacrifice in the war.
