About the memorial: The Shoolbred war memorial is a Roll of Honour for men from the Shoolbred & Co. department store who joined the armed forces during the First World War. It is a large, nowy-headed mahogany board measuring 5 feet high and 6 feet wide, with gilt painted inscriptions. The memorial lists both those who made the supreme sacrifice, numbering 26, and those who served and survived the war, numbering 519. Those who were killed were mainly men who died on the Somme on the first day of battle on 1st July 1916, and who served in the Queen’s Westminster Rifles, today succeeded by 7 RIFLES. James Shoolbred and Company, also known as Jas Shoolbred, was established in 1817 as a draper’s shop on the Tottenham Court Road in London. James Shoolbred’s drapery business had been established three years earlier, in 1814, as Shoolbred, Cook & Co., the ‘Cook’ of the partnership being a brother of the founder of Cook & Sons, wholesale outfitters of St. Paul’s Churchyard.  By the 1860s, James Shoolbred & Company was a thriving fashionable furniture shop, and by the 1880s it had become a department store, had been granted a Royal Warrant, and supplied quality antique furniture. The company did not survive the financial crisis of the 1920s, and ceased trading in 1931.

Harrods purchased James Shoolbred and Company in 1931, holding a big sale of Shoolbred’s stock, and selling the building on the Tottenham Court Road. The building was subsequently demolished and the site was redeveloped as a block of Art Deco flats known as Paramount Court, with retail units at street level. It is run by Paramount Court Residents Limited, a private limited company.

The Shoolbred War Memorial is a Roll of Honour of the members of the house of James Shoolbred and Co. Ltd, who joined the armed forces during the First World War. It is a large nowy-headed mahogany board with gilt painted inscriptions, measuring 5 feet high and 6 feet wide. The gilt laurel wreath that was once visible at the top of the memorial was sadly lost before the 1980s. The title inscription reads ‘1914-1918 Roll Of Honour Of Members Of The House Of Jas. Shoolbred & Co. Ltd. Who Joined The Country’s Armed Forces’.

The Shoolbred memorial is unusual, as it lists both those who made the supreme sacrifice, numbering 26, and those who served and survived the war, numbering 519. Those who were killed were mainly men who died on the Somme on the first day of battle on 1st July 1916, and who served in the Queen’s Westminster Rifles, succeeded today by F Company, 7th Battalion The Rifles.

It is believed that the Roll of Honour was on display in a public area within the Shoolbred building, but it was removed before the sale of the building and stored within Harrods. There is no evidence that it was ever displayed in public at Harrods. In the late 1980s the tower above the junction of Brompton Road and Hans Road, which was used for storage, was cleared out and the memorial was found covered in tarpaulin. It was moved to Harrods’ building in Trevor Square, Knightsbridge, with other architectural fragments. The memorial was then moved to Harrods’ Furniture Depository in Barnes, then to the distribution centre in Osterley, before being moved to Harrods’ Distribution Centre in Thatcham, Berkshire, in 2012.

The memorial has been painstakingly conserved to return it to display condition and the Harrods Company Archive has been seeking to relocate the memorial since 2017. In 2018, the residents of Paramount Court agreed that the memorial should be relocated to its original site, and installed in a lobby area in the Paramount Court residential block. Along with the support of the Paramount Court residents, this decision is also supported by 7 RIFLES (the successors of the Queen's Westminster Rifles), and the Queens Westminster Rifles Association.

As of August 2019, the memorial is located in the lobby of Paramount Court.
