About the memorial: Square base surmounted by tapering plinth, shaft and Celtic cross. Inscription carved onto the sides of the plinth. Hat and rifle carved on the right hand corner of the front face of the plinth. Celtic knot work design carved on the face of the cross. Memorial is by path leading to front door of church and on way to Tourist Information Office

This monument is erected by the Officers/ Non Commissioned Officers and men of the/ "F" (Oswestry) company of the 2nd V. B. The/ Kings (Shropshire Light Infantry) and friends/ to commemorate the bravery and devotion of/ Lance-corporal James Kenyon/ of the above company who volunteered and served/ in South Africa in the Boer War and was mentioned/ in despatches for his services/ G. H. Bull Major/ commanding/ South African War 1900 – 1901. Left side: Also/ to the memory of/ Sergeant-instructor WM Lee/ of the "D" (Hodnet) company 2nd V.B./ the Kings (Shropshire Light Infantry)/ (a native of Oswestry)/ who died on active service in South/ Africa during the Boer War and was/ mentioned in despatches for his services. Right side: to the Glory of God and/ in memory of/ Lance-corporal James Kenyon/ of Oswestry/ who died on active service in South/ Africa during the Boer War. Rear face: This monument was unveiled by/ Brigadier-General Lloyd/ C.B D.S.O./ of Aston Hall/ on the 19th February 1905./ Designed and executed by Corporal D. J. Lewis.
