About the memorial: On Boxing Day Tuesday 26th December 1944. At 21:26 hrs, a V2 rocket hit Mackenzie Road, including The Prince of Wales Public House, with the loss of 73 lives. At about 9.30pm the rocket fell leaving a crater 30 feet wide and 12 feet deep. In the Prince of Wales at the corner of Mackenzie Road locals were having a seasonal drink.The explosion caused the bar floor to collapse, dropping customers into the cellar, with debris from the falling building dropping on top. Over 340 people were casualties 86 suffering from severe injuries and widespread devastation.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
