About the memorial: A stained glass memorial window over the south door of The Church of St John the Evangelist, Whitby, depicting St George. This window was given by Captain Barton in memory of his son who was killed whilst serving in the Royal Flying Corps.

Harwood Woodwark Barton Cadet HW Barton, 63 Training Squadron was killed in Avro 504 D6306 on 2 July 1918, when he was doing a half roll but got into a nosedive and crashed to his death .Mr. Barton is buried in the family vault in Whitby – his family lived in Esk Terrace, Whitby.
