About the memorial: Small plaque attached to the top rail of the bridge. The plaque remembers the crewmen of 85 Sqn Mosquito HK374 VY-R who were killed when their aircraft crashed near this site on 08/02/44 The aircraft had departed West Malling to conduct a practise intercept on a 18 OTU Wellington LN185 that had departed Finningley on a Bullseye Op. Over Portsmouth, the two aircraft suffered a mid-air collision. The Wellington was cut in two and fell near Southbourne, West Susses whilst the Mosquito crashed in Emsworth. Seven airmen in the Wellington and two in the Mosquito were killed in the tragedy
