About the memorial: "Capt Richard Whitaker Porritt of the Lancashire Fusiliers was killed in action at Dunkirk on 26 May 1940. Richard was the Member of Parliament for the Heywood and Radcliffe Division of Lancaster from 1935. He was the first British MP to be killed in the Second World War. The Stubbins Estate, an upland property of 179.9ha, rises to 244m and comprises two farms and six cottages. It was given in 1943 by Col. A.T.Porritt in memory of his son." National Trust
