The moors were acquired in 1952 through the National Land Fund (NLF). The NLF was set up in 1946 to purchase places of significant beauty or heritage value as a lasting memorial to those who gave their lives in war. It transferred these properties to various organisations to maintain them and provide public access." National Trust
