About the memorial: This memorial is on the wall of the staircase leading to the maths corridor on the second floor of the Upper School. The names are in raised bronze lettering on three vertical panels set into a classical-style frame of English alabaster, with pilasters surmounted by capitals on either side of the panels and an entablature and raised pediment above. The coat of arms of Enfield Grammar School in red marble on a white marble background are set into the tympanum, with the motto TANT QUE JE PUIS. Below the memorial a brass plaque records the 'renovation and re-siting' of the memorial with financial support from the family of a former pupil killed in the Second World War, but it is not evident whether at that stage the memorial was re-sited from another location within the Grammar School. Presumably the additional lettering referring to those who fell in the Second World War was added as part of the refurbishment. At some point an additional name, F.G GANE, has been added: it does not appear on an illustration used in a newspaper article at the time of unveiling in 1922. Two contemporary newspaper accounts report the unveiling (and the appearance of the memorial itself) in some detail: Enfield Gazette 2 June 1922 and Enfield Weekly Herald of the same date. Enfield Grammar School Book of Remembrance 1914-19 (Enfield Council Local Studies 373.51 (1893)) includes biographies and photographs of most of the commemorated individuals, compiled shortly after their death. A new memorial listing the names of old boys who fell in the Second World War was unveiled in 2015 (see separate entry) and sits below the First World War memorial.
