About the memorial:
He is recorded in CWGC as HAZZARD, William. M.C. was a Second Lieutenant in the 15th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. He died of wounds received in action at Doullen's France on the 28th March 1918 age 30. A plaque can be found commemorating his death on the south wall of the Chancel in St. Lawrence Church (Note name spelt Hazard). Buried in Doullen Communal Cemetery Extension No. 1, Somme, France. His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to confer the Military Cross on the undermentioned Officers and Warrant Officers in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field :—-Temp. 2nd Lt. William Hazzard, W. York. R. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an infantry attack he reconnoitred under heavy fire to gain information. After the attack was held up he assisted in consolidating and strengthening a line of defence, and in organising the defenders from the remnants of several units. The security of the defence was largely due to his coolness and courage.
