About the memorial: On a farm track in middle of a field, the photos are in a tin box fixed to a stile 50 yards to the north where the path joins Bewholme Road. Field to the north of Little Atwick GR TA 182 504. The 2018 photo on this page shows a weather-beaten stone lying flat. The undated photo in the IWM Register link shows it in good condition and upright, supported by a plinth. It would be good to know which is correct. 158 Squadron Halifax HX351 NP-S had departed Lissett at 0016 on 20 February 1944 for Ops Leipzig. Tragically, seven minutes later the Halifax crashed into the field at 0023 with the loss of all crew. This was the first of 78 Bomber Command aircraft losses suffered on this Op and it is believed that the Pilot lost control on entering cloud which may have led to tail plane failure but this could not be confirmed in the investigation
