About the memorial: Memorial Hall in the grounds of the school, with 6 wall mounted bronze plaques for WW1 and 2 wall mounted bronze plaques for WW2. The WW1 dedication is in two parts in gold lettering on wooden beams above each rank of 3 WW1 Plaques. 173 WW1 Fallen. 78 WW2. The six panels of the World War One memorial were originally to have been put in a Memorial Hall to have been built on the School's original Merchiston Castle site. The council declined permission for another building to go onto the already crowded site. As a temporary measure, the memorial panels were put in the Old Assembly Hall, and dedicated with a service in November 1923. Merchiston Castle School completed the purchase of the estate of Colinton House in 1924. Over the next few years, a number of new buildings were erected close to Colinton House. Included in one of these was the Memorial Hall. The six panels of the school's First World War memorial were fixed to the wall, three either side of the main entrance to the hall. In years to come, the two memorial panels for the Second World War were placed on the walls opposite the First World War panels. The panels commemorate former pupils as well as masters who were lost in the wars.
