ON THE 11TH MAY 1986 THIS STANDARD OF THE BATH & WEST / EX-FAR EAST PRISONERS OF WAR CLUB WAS RECEIVED INTO THE / ABBEY IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE MEMBERS OF / THE ALLIED ARMED FORCES AND THOSE CIVILIANS OF WHOM / SO MANY GAVE THEIR LIVES AND SUFFERED HARDSHIP / TORMENT AND DEPRIVATION WHILST IN CAPTIVITY IN / THE FAR EAST DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR AND / WHOSE ENFORCED LABOURS BUILT THE INFAMOUS / BURMA-SIAM RAILWAY OF WHICH THE BRIDGE ON THE / RIVER KWAI IS A SYMBOL BOTH OF / MANS INHUMANITY TO MAN / AND OF HUMAN COMRADESHIP / IN AFFLICTION
