About the memorial: The Flying Fortress crashed near the Pond after eight of the crew baled pout but the pilot, Captain Robert Cogswell of the 8th USAAF 303 Bomb Group remained on board long enough to steer the plane beyond the residential area before baling out.

This honours Captain Robert Cogswell/303 Bomb Group US 8th AF/whose conduct/saved Alresford from potential disaster/September 26th 1943./His B17 Flying Fortress Lady Luck/with full bomb load/crashed east of the pond 1/4 of a mile from here./His crewmen baled out/ but the pilot ensured it would clear the town/before he jumped to safety.
