About the memorial: Avenue of 18 lime trees with dedicatory wooden boards on them. Although 16 trees were originally planted, 18 are now World War One memorials. While the original 16 trees were planted in January 1920, a further tree was planted later in 1920 to honour Frederick Brearly who passed away in June 1920 as a result of injuries sustained during the war. A further tree was also planted to honour Joseph Wade who was an East Keswick resident but who's name appears on the war memorial in Hunslet. Something to note is that the row of trees was continued with the planting of a further 4 in 1937. These trees were planted by Princess Mary, The Princess Royal and Viscountess of Harewood to commemorate her brother's 1936 coronation. Dedicated 31/1/1920. many original ones still there. Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
