Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

It is proposed to place a stained glass window in Whaplode Church, as a memorial to those men of the place who laid down their lives in the Great War. Designs submitted by Mr. Temple Moore in connection therewith have been approved by the Committee. It is proposed to rebuild the stonework in what is believed to be in accordance with the original plans of the church, and at the bottom the names of the fallen heroes will be carved in the stone. Judging from the designs the memorial promises to be beautiful in character, and a fitting way of perpetuating the memory of those gallant lads who made the great sacrifice in defence of their country and their friends. Subscription lists for the fund are now open and it is to be hoped that the fund will meet with the success it richly deserves.

TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN: - Although people are sometimes of short memory, and some have almost forgotten the war, the Whaplode people do not intend to forget just yet. To perpetuate the memory of the fallen, their next of kin are to be presented with a sterling silver medallion. Mr G. N. Wright is defraying the cost, over £14, for the 28 tokens, which are just 1½ inch in diameter and have been supplied by Messrs Harrods, of London. Saracens Head soldiers are included. On one side is inscribed, “Greater love have no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” On the other side the soldiers name is inscribed in the centre, and round the edge the following: “Whaplode St. Mary, Great European War, 1914 – 19.”

WHAPLODE MEMORIAL

Dedicating a Stained Glass Window

	A large congregation attended the ancient Whaplode Parish Church on Monday evening on the occasion of the dedication of the Whaplode War Memorial, which takes the form of a stained-glass window on the south side of the nave.
	The window is a gem in workmanship and has upon it figures representing the Virgin Mary, St. Michael and St. George, and also the following inscription and names: -
	“To the Glory of God and in honoured memory of all who fought in the Great European War. 1914 – 1918, especially those whose names are recorded below: Norman Blackburn, Frank Busley, William Clarke, Timothy Cross, Alfred De Camps, Ernest Frederick Bradley, George Richard Cooper, Walter Edwin Crane, William Ernest Crane, Cyril John Harrison, Ernest Fletcher, Stanley Fletcher, Alfred Herd, Joseph Hedley, Thomas Naylor, Joseph Holt Buck, John Francis Cook, John William Hopkins, Arthur William Jarvis, Walter Hood Johnson, William Reynolds, Arthur Slator, Frederick Thrower, Frank Vellum, Jonah Watkin, Frederick Herbert Lynne, George William Robinson, Hy. Churchill McNeil-Smith, Joseph Walter Staff, George Stephenson, George William Timson.”
	The installation of the memorial window involved the restoring of the old stonework, and the supporting of the coping which was sinking and cost £430.
	A solemnly impressive, yet beautiful, service was held, special hymns and Psalms being sung. The choir and clergy formed a procession to the widow, which was dedicated and blessed by the Vicar, the Rev. H. G. Woods.
	The Rev. T. C. Staveley, Rector of Walpole St. Peter, who was chaplain to the Forces in France and Palestine during the war, gave a delightfully interesting address, bearing upon heroism and courage. He asked what constituted brave men: they had a way of looking upon all the lads who had fallen as heroes and brave men. He did not think the ex-Service men present thought so. Men who were considered brave did not think so themselves – they went out to do their “bit,” and did their best. He regarded his Colonel and Brigade Major as brave men when they went out into No Man’s Land at night, but when talking to them they did not consider themselves brave, and said they felt very much afraid. All brave men were sometimes afraid.
	He asked why they thought so much of the thirtyone Whaplode men who had laid down their lives. They were proud of them, because they answered the country’s call when the need was greatest: they honoured them because they fought so well. They knew their lads fought as Englishmen fight, bravely and cleanly, and they were grateful.
	A motto, which he commended to them, and which he had had erected over the Memorial Cross in his (Walpole) Church, was “Think and Thank.” He hoped they would bear the words and the meaning with them.
