WILFRED TOWNSEND CARLESS/ MAJOR 1ST HEREFORDSHIRE REGT/ 1897 - 1915./ BORN AT HEREFORD 25TH AUGUST 1875/ EDUCATED AT THE CATHEDRAL SCHOOL./ FREEMAN OF THIS CITY./ REGISTRAR OF THE COUNTY COURT./ DEPUTY & COUNTY CORONER./ HE SAILED WITH THE BRITISH MEDITERRANEAN/ EXPEDITIONARY FORCE TO THE DARDANELLES/ ON 16TH JULY 1915, LANDED AT SUVLA BAY AT/ DAWN ON AUGUST 9TH, HE WAS LAST SEEN/ ON THE EVENING OF AUGUST 12TH WHILE/ IN COMMAND OF THE BATTALION AND/ HAS BEEN "MISSING" SINCE THAT DATE / "SPLENDID YOU PASSED THE GREAT SURRENDER MADE / INTO THE LIGHT THAT NEVERMORE SHALL FADE; / ALL YOU HAD HOPED FOR ALL YOU HAD YOU GAVE / TO SAVE MANKIND - YOURSELF YOU SCORNED TO SAVE" / THIS TABLET IS ERECTED HERE BY HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN / IN PROUD AND LOVING REMEMBRANCE OCTOBER 1919
