This marks the entrance / to the / Lathom Park Remount Depot. / During the Great War 1914-1919 / 330,000 horses & mules came / for active service preperation. [sic] / The adjacent parkland, / the ancestral home of the / Earl of Lathom, was lent to / the War Department in / August 1914 to create the Depot. / Circa 5,600 servicemen also / came here for instruction / in the Handling, Driving & Care / of horses. / Whilst providing employment for / any during that period.
