About the memorial: Kirkpatrick was a native of South Shields who served with the Australians at Gallipoli as a stretcher bearer. He became famous for using donkeys to transport the wounded until he himself was killed in 1915. The statue is by the museum in the pedestrianised section of Ocean Road. Bronze statue of Kirkpatrick and donkey on stone plinth. He served in the Australian army as Private John Simpson. There has been much subsequent controversy about the failure to award him a posthumous Victoria Cross.
