About the memorial: Carved, painted and gilded stone frame with slate inserts, the names carved and gilded. Either side of the stone frame is decorated with laurels in relief, painted black with gilded bands. Above the main inscription is a carved and painted rood group in traditional style. The names are engraved in five columns both for WW1 and WW2.

WAR MEMORIAL: - On Sunday night hundreds were unable to gain admission to the Parish Church, when the war memorial was unveiled by Lord Yarborough and dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Lincoln. There was the largest congregation present in the history of the church. Headed by the Subscription Silver Band, the Scunthorpe Territorials, members of the British Legion, Ambulance Brigade Nursing Division and Police, along with the Chairman, members and officials of the Scunthorpe and Frodingham Urban Council marched in procession from the headquarters of the British Legion to the church and whilst seats were reserved for the members of public bodies and for the relatives of the fallen, hundreds of people were unable to gain admission. The service was conducted by the Rev. C. A. Rust, M.A., (Rural Dean), assisted by the Vicar of Crosby the Rec. Humfrey Barton, M.A., whilst the Rev G.E. Ure acted as Bishop’s chaplain. The service was opened with the processional hymn “Ten thousand times ten thousand,” and the singing throughout was a feature, The Rev. H. Barton read the lesson Revelation vii. 9-17 after which there was a brief silence, the congregation standing in thankful and honoured remembrance of those men from the parish and congregation who gave their lives in the service of their King and  country. Prior to the unveiling and  dedication  the choir  rendered  the anthem  “Blest,  are the  Departed”  From Spohrs, “Last Judgement”.”
The first two verses of “Jerusalem the Golden” were sung whilst the clergy and choir proceeded to the memorial   which was then unveiled by the Earl of Yarborough, Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, who lost his own eldest son in the war. Lord Yarborough said that
 
their thoughts that evening went back to those fateful days, a little more than seven years ago when Germany as a result of the idolatry that might was right, unsheathed the sword and committed one of the greatest crimes in history. They recalled the spirit of patriotism which swept through the country-the battles of the Marne and the Somme-days of sorrow and of great anxiety to many Lincolnshire families. They recalled the mixed feelings of perplexity, pathos and pride which they experienced during those four and a half years of war, and then the victory of our armies, and the triumph right over might. They could look back that night on what this country did in the war. How we kept command of the seas whilst our own armies were fighting eight different campaigns. How we produced money and munitions not only for our own armies but for our allies as well and how we developed food production at home. Our greatest pride, however was in that spirit of patriotism and self sacrifice which induced our young men to leave their wives and families and all they held dear, and to die if need be, for their country.
With deep humility and reverence he acknowledged the heroism of the fallen and expressed his sincere sympathy with those present who find that time does …….. heal the wound. They remembered these young men when in their youth and vigour and cheerfulness, and he asked them to always think of them as such. If they mourned for them let their sorrow be mingled with the greatest pride for the sacrifice they made for the liberty and freedom, not only for England , but for the whole world. Each man whose name was recorded on that tablet died the noblest death a man could die-fighting for God and right and liberty-and such a death meant immortality.
The Bishop afterwards preached from the first and second verse of the 12th Chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews, said that they had taken part in a service which, was rather pretty- he would not say sad-for the sorrow of bereavement had been transfigured in pride and
thankfulness. Those men had truly fought a great fight and, together with the Allies, they had defeated the most organised attempt , to make force the ultimate arbiter in the affairs of the world. He believed the issue of the war had been a blessing to Germany, and he believed and hoped that the great people-and the Germans were a great people-would gradually find their way to a truer and deeper conception of what life meant-in a truer and deeper liberty. They could not look upon those men who laid down their lives as though their lives had been wasted. They went into the life beyond more noble than if they had lived to three score years and ten, and when a man died noble he was passed on to a higher service under God. He
believed that when men laid down their lives in such a cause their spirits were purified and made noble. He only threw it out as a casual suggestion, but he did not think they ought to look  upon  the  departed  as  being  ignorant  of  what  happened  to  those  left  behind.  The suggestion was that the life beyond the grave was a life of growth, progress, development and purification, The life beyond the grave was probably a life of changes, and when anyone passed from this life could no doubt be used to the full in the life beyond, and it was in that
sense that he believed in the world to come.

The memorial tablet is on the north wall and measures 7’6” by 5’3”. Faculty on page 243 of Faculty Book 14, gives location as being the west wall, designed by Sir Charles A Nicholson, New Square, Lincolns, Inn London
