About the memorial: Inside the church on the right-hand (south) wall of the nave. A bronze figure of a mounted horseman (Lieut Col Thynne), standing atop a marble frieze, with bronze regimental badge and a memorial tablet, detailing the service of Lieutenant Colonel Algernon Carteret Thynne.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

The spirit shall return unto God who gave it/Lieut-Colonel/Algernon Carteret Thynne D.S.O./Royal North Devon Hussars/of Penstowe/2nd son of Francis John Thynne J.P.D.L. of Haynes Park Bedfordshire/Lord of the Manors of Kilkhampton Stratton and Binhamy/and grandson of the Reverend Lord John Thynne D.D./3rd son of the 2nd Marquis of Bath K.G. /Born April 9th 1868/He served throughout the South African War 1899 - 1902/as Captain in the 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry/North Somerset Squadron/ was twice mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.S,O./ the Queen's Medal and four clasps/and the King's Medal and two clasps/in (?) transferred to the Royal North Devon Hussars/He served in the Great War 1915 - 16 and 17 in Gallipoli & Egypt/ Also in Palestine in command of the regiment/where he fell mortally wounded at the Battle of Sherria/November 6th 1917/ I thank my God for every remembrance of you.
