About the memorial: Erected on South Wall 49 Sqdn. Hampden 1 P1206 EA-K. Took off Scampton1714. Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed 2107 Hampden P1206 EA-K had departed Scampton at 1714 for Ops Essen on 08-09/11/41 It was intercepted at Berkhout 20km E of Alkmaar, Holland by a Luftwaffe Night Fighter captained by Ofw Siegfred Ney (V/NJG2) and shot down for his 9th Abschusse. The aircraft crashed into the Ijsselmeer at 2107, the two Pilots are buried in Bergen War Cemetery in the Netherlands, the two crewmen remained missing However recent construction work in the Netherland uncovered both the aircraft and the remains of the two missing crewmen. They have since been re-buried with full military honours alongside their crewmates.
