About the memorial: Memorial Board on wall of Garden Centre Café remembers those killed in a Mid Air Collision above the village on 25/08/44 83 OTU Wellington's HF519 & MF589 had departed Peplow, Shropshire for Diversion Ops over Normandy in support of Bomber Command Main Force Ops elsewhere. The two aircraft collided over the Chilterns with HF517 crashing at 0125 and MF589 shortly afterwards. Both aircraft fell to ground in the village of Prestwood. Of the six Airmen aboard each aircraft, only one survived. Two civilians on the ground suffered severe burns whilst escaping from their cottage whilst they attempted to cross a newly tarred road that was ablaze with aviation fuel
