About the memorial: Memorial in woods adjacent to A404 remembers six of the crew of 578 Squadron Halifax LK794 LK-Q killed when their aircraft crashed near here on 18/07/1944. The OS Grid Ref is SU 84299 82805 with Dungrove Hill Lane off the A308. The aircraft had departed Burn along with 20 other Halifax aircraft of 578 Squadron ordered to attack enemy gun positions in France. As their formation approached Oxford, the starboard Inner engine of the plane caught fire. All attempts to deal with the blaze were unsuccessful and the captain ordered the crew to bail out. Only the Rear Gunner Flight Sergeant Hugh Sloan managed to do so and parachute to safety before, in full view of the rest of the squadron, the aircraft rolled on to its back and dived vertically into the ground. Carrying a full bomb load, the aircraft exploded with such force that no trace of the six remaining crew was ever found. They are also remembered on the Runnymede Memorial, Egham, Surrey. By an ironic twist of fate, the crew had actually completed their tour of 30 operations but volunteered to do one more sortie. This site is also an official war grave.
