About the memorial: Memorial Display adjacent to Public Footpath to the memory of the crew of 97 Squadron Lancaster JB219 OF-R which had departed Bourn at 1650 for Ops Berlin. On return and in poor weather, the aircraft crashed at this site less than a mile short of the former RAF Gransden Lodge airfield at 0145. All seven crew were killed 97 Squadron lost eight aircraft in this one, just one of the many victims of “Black Thursday” -the night that Bomber Command lost more aircraft and crews to poor weather over England on their return than to enemy action 483 Lancaster's and 10 Mosquito's had participated in the raid on Berlin, 25 Lancaster's being lost to enemy action An additional 29 Lancaster's and 1 Stirling (from a Gardening Op) were lost due to the poor weather over the UK on their return, either crashing whilst attempting to land or crashing have run out of fuel whilst waiting for the poor weather to clear NB This is an approximate position of the memorial
