About the memorial: Metal plaque attached to the wall of the bridge remembering the crew of 101Sqn Lancaster W4319 SR-N that crashed close to this site on 17/12/1942 The aircraft had departed from Holme on Spalding Moor on "Operation Gardening" off the North German coast. On its return, its IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) equipment was unserviceable and in a case of tragic mis-identification, it was engaged by Middlesborough's anti-aircraft guns and shot down. The aircraft crashed at Grangetown at 2210 with the loss of all seven crew
