About the memorial: Memorial plaque remembers Sgt H.P. Riddle KIA 15/03/44 He was Flight Engineer on 7 Sqn Lancaster ND557 MG-F that had departed Oakington for Ops Stuttgart at 1939 At approx 2300, the aircraft was observed on fire, approaching the German village of Tannheim. Shortly afterwards it was seen to crash and explode on impact. The explosion was so great that it rocked the surrounding area and it was believed to have still been carrying its full bomb load when it crashed, leaving a crater 25ft deep and 100ft wide & wreckage spread over a very wide area. All the crew were killed
