About the memorial: Memorial adjacent to picnic area car park remembers those killed in the crash of 50 Sqn Lancaster ED393 VN-K on 26-27/11/43 The aircraft had departed Skellingthorpe at 1708 for Ops Berlin. On its return, it was diverted to land at Pocklington due to fog over Lincolnshire. Less than a mile from the safety of Pocklington's runways it crashed into a farmhouse. Five of the seven-man crew were killed as were two local residents. An utterly tragic example of "So close and yet so far".
